PNP Issues Safety Tips for Facebook Users
By AARON RECUENCO
October 21, 2010, 11:00am
In a statement posted in its website, the PNP leadership stressed that while Facebook is a good tool for meeting new friends and interacting with old acquaintances, the site can also be used for criminal possibilities like “identity theft” and “phishing scam.”
Police officials described phishing scam as a cyber crime wherein hackers would get all the bank and credit details from a Facebook account holder and used them for their own transaction.
But what is really alarming, Chief Supt. Yolanda Tanigue said, is that social networking sites like Facebook and Friendster are being used by some criminals in preying on female users.
“The popularity of these websites has a big effect on rape cases. Most of the rape cases are connected with Facebook and even texting,” said Tanigue in a recent weekly forum in Camp Crame.
Tanigue, head of the PNP-Women and Children Protection Center, revealed that sex predators usually pose as someone with the same age and would go on with their sinister plan during the meeting or what is called “eyeballs.”
“Facebook is one of the most popular and in demand way of communication and social networking, with over 500 million users. Through Facebook you can find your old friends, reconnect with your relatives from abroad, meet new friends and get to chat and play games at the same time,” the PNP statement read.
“Now the question is, “Is your account safe enough?” it added.
Here are some tips that can help you to protect your account according to the PNP.
1. Hide yourself from Facebook search result.
A. Avoid cyber harassment and security threats by changing your account settings so you are not publicly visible. If you do not want others to find you, change your user name into middle name if you are married. You may also go to privacy settings and click the view setting from “everyone” to “friends” or select “customize” to make your settings even more private.
B. Add only those people you are familiar with. Strangers are dangerous.
C. Use ACCOUNT SETTINGS to change all your Profile and Information.
2. Limit your personal information.
A. For your personal security and for your families’ protection keep your personal information private to avoid criminal possibilities such as stalking, kidnapping, harassment and the likes.
B. You can fill-up all the data about yourself but limit it to those people who are your real friends.
C. Do not provide the year and the place where you were born because you have just given the identity thieves a key in stealing your financial life. A study showed that the date and place of birth could be used to predict most and sometimes all of the numbers and passwords you are using.
D. Do not post your mobile phone, landline phone and your home address.
E. You can also set the privacy settings of your personal information and select which parts of your profile can be seen by whom.
3. Protect your Albums
A. Set the privacy settings of your albums to prevent embarrassing comments from other persons as well as avoid criminal possibilities like cyber harassment, human trafficking and extortion.
B. Post pictures of you with your friends that are memorable, so they will be interested to view your albums.
C. Do not post any pornographic and infamous photos or upload videos that can cause embarrassment to you or to others.
D. You can set your photo albums’ Privacy Settings so that only your real friends can see it.
4. Publishing Stories on your Wall Post and News Feed
A. Avoid wrong comments and cyber harassment by posting or sharing a comment or video that are educational and informative in nature instead of divulging information about your personal life.
B. Do not post any of your misbehavior, anybody can read that.
C. To control who can post on your wall, go to “Options” and click on the “Settings” icon on the wall in your Profile page and select who can post to your wall.
5. Avoid chatting to people you don’t know.
A. You are not sure if it is really your friend who is using the account. Avoid topic that is naughty to talk about, there are identity thieves out there. It will cause sexual harassment, cyber harassment or chaos to both of you.
B. Chat or talk only to those whom you really know. Change the topic if you sense something unusual or better yet, try not to chat with the person anymore.
C. Do not talk too much about your personal life or give too many information.
